Subject: Fw: Heavy metals in Herbal Products - Harvard Medical School (USA) Report.

 Dear Kolbe Anema,

We are sad and shocked to read (16th Dec, 2004 Hindustan Times – one of India’s respected Daily News Papers) that fourteen out of 70 different Ayurvedic products taken from some South Asian Grocery Stores (Boston-USA) were found to have potentially harmful levels of Lead, Mercury & Arsenic. The News is very saddening because of it’s adverse impact on the good reputation of Ayurveda as a whole. It is very unfortunate that the doings of a few who reportedly produced and marketed the bad products are threatening to besmear the reputation of all, including those who manufacture safe, effective and top quality Ayurveda products. The News is all the more disturbing because the manufacturers named in the Harvard study (please see the attached News) are expected to be knowledgeable about the Science of Ayurveda, including the Dos & Donts fundamental to the production of safe and effective Ayurveda Products. It is an established and well recognised fact that Ayurveda is a precise Science built on the time-tested foundations of hygiene, safety and efficacy. Therefore, unless a manufacturer is lacking in the knowledge of Ayurveda, or, is deficient in the management of quality and safety standards, the problem of the presence of heavy Metals in the Ayurveda Products has no possibility of occurring. The only other possibility can be that the products, found to contain heavy metals, may be non-genuine (Counterfeit) products. This possibility, we hope would be looked into for immediate redressal. Maharishi Ayurveda Products, the name that is prominently absent in the List of Manufacturers whose products were found to contain the Heavy Metals, as the pioneer in the global resurgence of AYURVEDA, has been built on the foundation of the following firm guiding principiums:

i)        The Maharishi Ayurveda healthcare system shall incorporate the purity of the ancient and time-tested Science of Ayurveda and simultaneously revalidated through rigorous Scientific Clinical trials conducted at the best of the Medical Institutions. By now 76 Tests and Trials have been completed in 15 of the top Medical Institutions in India & USA. Each one of the Clinical Trial has revealed the efficacy of MA products, and without any adverse Side-effects.

ii)      The Maharishi Ayurveda Products (Medicines, Food Supplements, etc) shall be produced in the State-of-art manufacturing plants, Certified for practicing International Systems of Quality Management, HACCP (Hazard Analysis and critical Control Points), and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP & cGMP). MAPL is therefore a ISO-9001-2000, HACCP, GMP and cGMP Certified Company. It is important to know that all these Quality Certifications mean that MAPL is audited by the Independent Experts once every Six months for reverifying our adherence to the rigorous requirements of Quality and Safety.

iii)     MAPL, the manufacturer of Maharishi Ayurveda Products, shall develop and strictly follow stringent Standards for Ingredients, inprocess production stages and the finished Products so as to ensure that the MA Products are Safe (i.e. from Toxicity of heavy metals, insecticides, Pesticides, etc), reliable, effective and consistent batch-after-batch.

To Maharishi Ayurveda Products Limited, therefore, Producing Safe and effective products is a NO – DEVIATION commitment. Therefore, all Ingredients required for MA production must clear the Acceptance Standards before these are allowed for entry into the production zones. The in-process stages are well-defined where the in-process materials are a subject of clearance from the Quality Control Laboratory only after which the further production process is permitted. The finished Products are finally again subjected to Laboratory Tests to ensure that the product fully meets the end-product clearance criteria in all respects, including the Physico – chemical parameters, toxic trace metals, residual organochlorine pesticides and microbiological contaminants. Any herb or ingredient, in- process material or finished Product that is found to be not meeting the Acceptance Standards is outright rejected irrespective of the pressures of commitments of timely shipments to customers or the resultant losses to MAPL. What is sacrosanct in MAPL is to supply safe, reliable and effective products at any cost. We are aware that it requires total commitment from those involved in the manufacturing of Ayurveda Medicines to ensure that, irrespective of the costs involved, only absolutely safe, reliable and effective products should be allowed to be released for sales. I am also conscious that the top Managements have to be personally committed to achieve and maintain the highest standards inherent in the traditions of Ayurveda, and, that wherever the mere profit objectives will take precedence over the ethics of one’s responsibility towards customer’s health, the kind of unfortunate Harvard Medical Research results would occur and tarnish the very name of Ayurveda. It is also for this reason that one has to guard against those who, in order to make quick profits, offer low priced non-genuine Ayurveda Products or even high priced Ayurveda products produced in plants and places which are not certified for any Quality Standards. It is therefore, my appeal to all to never deal with any non-MAPL products. Recently, before the Harvard Medical School Study was published, Dr. Raju had released an appeal (copy enclosed) as to why only MAPL products should be prescribed and sold. Finally, I would again like to reassure everyone that MAPL is committed to continue to produce and provide only safe, reliable and effective products, products which are within the notified safety limits set by the Medical World. In the context of the wide news and media coverage about the presence of heavy metals in some of the Ayurveda products of some of the manufacturers, though not Maharishi Ayurveda Products, I think it necessary to share with others our philosophy, our approach and our deep Commitment to Quality Assurance and Management Systems so as to deliver only safe, effective and reliable products. We shall always put in our best endeavors to uphold the faith of people in Maharishi Ayurveda. You are, therefore, free to share my letter on the subject with all those you consider appropriate.

With regards
Anand

Subject: heavy metals in Ayurveda
Dear Vicki and Ansie, This article has some very interesting and potentially useful information. Here is the essence of it, from paragraphs 13-14: However, Dubey said that the presence of such metals does not automatically equate to heavy metal toxicity because in the process of preparing Ayurvedic medicine metals, such as lead, mercury and arsenic, are combined with minerals and plants and detoxified — so they are present, but not harmful. "Metals are there, but not in there elemental form," he said. "[The combination of metal, minerals and plants] forms a new complex and that new complex is non-toxic."With best wishes, Peter Swan.
